Behold...Gun Control Program Transferred to Solicitor GeneralOTTAWA, April 14, 2003 - The Honourable Martin Cauchon, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, in conjunction with the Honourable Wayne Easter, Solicitor General of Canada, today announced the gun control program has now been formally transferred from the Department of Justice Canada to the Solicitor General of Canada Portfolio. "Through this move, the Government of Canada continues to take progressive steps in strengthening the management and operation of the gun control program," said Minister Cauchon. "Transferring it under the responsibility of the Solicitor General of Canada Portfolio is the appropriate step for a program that has now moved from development to ongoing operation and maintenance." "Canadians overwhelmingly support the principles that underlie the firearms program and public safety remains a key priority," said Minister Easter. "On February 21, 2003, Minister Cauchon and I announced an action plan to improve service, reduce costs and ensure accountability. Sound fiscal management has been a strength of this Government and it will be the focus of my efforts over the coming months." The Government of Canada is currently implementing a series of changes for an improved, more cost effective gun control program. Plans to transfer the program were first announced in the action plan, after a comprehensive, independent review of the gun control program. The Department of Justice and Solicitor General Canada have worked in close collaboration during recent weeks to ensure an orderly transition of the program. Crime prevention projects in Labrador |
